The American Dream is fading for many, as the cost of living continues to rise, leaving workers struggling to make ends meet. Despite Donald Trump's promises to fix the affordability crisis, the reality on the ground paints a different picture. The White House's claims of a roaring economy and plummeting inflation ring hollow for those facing mounting financial pressures.
One of the most striking examples of this is the story of Dawn Levie, a postal service worker in Arizona. Levie's earnings have taken a hit due to reduced hours, making it increasingly difficult to afford basic necessities. This is not an isolated case; many workers across the country are feeling the pinch. Bryan Williams, a home-care worker in Wisconsin, is living paycheck to paycheck, constantly worrying about how to cover essential expenses like rent, bills, and food.
The data supports these personal accounts. Food prices have risen by 2.9% in January compared to the previous year, and are predicted to increase by 3.1% over the next year. Utility prices have also surged by over 6% in January 2026. As a result, more Americans are turning to debt to cover their basic needs. Total household debt reached $18.8 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2025, with credit card debt hitting a record $1.28 trillion. Meanwhile, wages have stagnated for many, with the 10% lowest wage earners experiencing a decline in their purchasing power.
What's particularly concerning is the contrast between the experiences of lower-income workers and higher-income Americans. While the latter have been earning more than ever, the former are struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living. This disparity highlights the failure of the current economic system to support those at the bottom.
The Trump administration's policies have only exacerbated this problem. By cutting healthcare and food assistance programs, and seeking to remove minimum wage and overtime protections for workers, the administration is making it harder for people to afford basic necessities. Despite the clear evidence of rising prices and declining wages, the White House continues to insist that the affordability problem doesn't exist.
This raises a deeper question: what is the true measure of economic success? Is it the soaring profits of corporations and the wealthy elite, or the well-being of the average worker? From my perspective, the current economic trajectory is not sustainable, and it's high time we reevaluate our priorities. The American Dream should be accessible to all, not just a select few. It's time to address the root causes of income inequality and ensure that everyone has a fair shot at success.
